Shoes win consecutive titles

The Wooden Shoes successfully defended their Class 2A state baseball championship on Saturday with a 4-0 win over Melrose Park Walther Lutheran at O’Brien Field.

This time, however, Teutopolis (33-2) came in as the favorite, unlike last season when it surprised the field.

“But it’s just as exciting this year as it was last year,” Wooden Shoes coach Justin Fleener said. “Every state championship is always special, be it the first or those that are special enough to get two.”

The only thing that delayed the final outcome was a 45-minute weather delay in the third inning of a then-scoreless tie.

Teutopolis got all of the runs it needed in a three-run fourth.

Shortstop Dillon Hardiek (2-for-3, two runs, RBI) hit an RBI double to rightcenter, plating Garrett Overbeck, who had singled and gone to second on an error.

The senior, who improved to 10-0, ended the season giving up just one earned run, with 112 strikeouts in 64 innings.

WL (18-15) had runners in scoring position in five innings, but could not get the key hit against Thompson.

“They were a good-hitting team, and they made contact all the time,” Thompson said. “I was happy to go all the way.”
