Layland to host ‘Steppin’ Out: Six Decades of Shoes’

From Romans’ sandals to Carrie Bradshaw’s Manolo Blahniks, shoes have always been important to women, symbolizing vanity, sex, luck or status. They play a central role in popular stories; just think of Mercury flying with winged sandals, Prince Charming searching with a glass slipper, or Dorothy clicking her silver [not red in the book] shoes to go home to Kansas with Toto.

Furthermore, shoes have sealed contracts in Israel, transferred a bride to her husband’s house, and symbolized fealty to Holy Church. Shoes are a powerful cultural statement.

Layland Museum invites everyone to a Brown Bag lunch called “Steppin’ Out—Six Decades of Shoes” on Wednesday. The program is set for noon to 1 p.m. at 208 N. Main St., the Gathering Room. Bring a lunch and beverage. Dessert will be provided the Museum Reception Committee. The program is free.

Patsy “Pat” Downing will display approximately six decades of shoes, which just happen to be one of her biggest weaknesses along with clothes and accessories to dress up or dress down. She will talk about styles, thrift shopping, and daring to be brave enough to “put it all together.”
