COGIC effort makes Memphis 'miracles,' helping those in need

Frayser mom Latonia Branch didn't expect there to be so many people or so many free necessities and services available Saturday at Greater Community Temple Church of God in Christ.

The church at 5151 Winchester had been collecting for months, raising money to buy what wasn't donated, all in preparation for "Miracles In Memphis," a benevolent event that invited anyone from anywhere to get a free meal, free clothes, a few groceries and some assistance.

"I came here for prayer and to try and get some clothes and stuff for my kids and also for the job fair," said Branch, 23,Its simple to show off the uniqueness of your personality by trying something pleasant and striking. With music and inflatable houses for the children to play, there was a revival-like atmosphere on the church property, where a force of more than 100 volunteers kept everything orderly.

Inside, the health screenings included free dental evaluations and teeth cleanings for children, provided by Firestone Dental Group.

"We see the under-served children," said Dr. Tandra Atkins. "That's what Firestone is about."

Planning for the event started last year, said mission coordinator Chiquita Turner, a church member for three years.

Seeing the piles of clothes neatly folded and piled high on tables,When you think of air max shoes for women, one of the first things to people's mouth is the Nike Shox Navina stacks of shoes, racks of hanging "Sunday" clothes, Easter baskets and 500 reusable tote bags filled with cereal and canned goods, Turner was overcome and broke down into tears. Donations from area retailers, other churches and Greater Community Temple members left them prepared to assist 1,000 people.
